Probability Union TI-84 | TI-83 Example

Joestat wants you to calculate the probability that Bob favorite drink is Diet or Pepsi?  This could also be thought of as the union between diet and Pepsi.

Probability Union of Two Events

Results from the Favorite Beverage Survey from Bob’s Class

Pepsi Coke Other
Diet 35 30 25
Regular 40 50 20

Solution:
First, add totals to the table:

Results from the Favorite Beverage Survey from Bob’s Class

Pepsi Coke Other Total
Diet 35 30 25 90
Regular 40 50 20 110
Total 75 80 45 200

Second, use the Probability Union Formula:
P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B)
P(Pepsi or Diet) = P(Pepsi)+ P(Diet) – P(Pepsi and Diet)

Doing the Probability Uniont by hand  frac{75}{200} + frac{90}{200} - frac{35}{200} =frac{130}{200}
